Area unemployment rate expected to surpass level of 9.6 percent reached in 1992, economist says.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area hit 9.5 percent in September, coming close to a level last reached 17 years ago.
The rate is likely to exceed the 9.6 percent rate of December 1992 even as the recession loosens its grip on the nation’s economy, said Mark Price, a labor economist with the Keystone Research Center in Harrisburg.
