A strong current of recent opinion suggests that there is “nothing we can do” about an economy threatening to spiral down and a middle class under assault. We strongly disagree. While most of this report will focus on how poorly our economy is performing from the perspective of typical families, do not mistake that emphasis for pessimism or fatalism. Our economic problems, in the short and the long run, are largely self-inflicted.
