HARRISBURG – Keystone Research Center Executive Director Stephen Herzenberg made the following state after the release of the July federal jobs report:
“Today’s U.S. jobs report for July reveals a deeply concerning trend that demands urgent attention. With just 73,000 jobs added nationally in July and dramatic downward revisions of 258,000 jobs for May and June, we could be seeing the early signs of a recession.
“The three-month average of only 35,000 jobs added represents a rapid deterioration in the labor market that Pennsylvania workers cannot afford. The weakening in the last three months includes a 37,000 decline in manufacturing jobs.
“Also of concern is the rise in Black unemployment to 7.2%, its highest rate in nearly four years.
“Federal employment continues to decline, with 84,000 federal jobs lost since January, showing that government efficiency efforts are having real consequences for workers.
“These numbers make it clear that now is precisely the wrong time to cut back on federal investments in infrastructure, climate, and innovation that create jobs and economic opportunity across our Commonwealth.”
