HARRISBURG, PA – In response to a strong majority of nearly 800 nurses at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital voting to unionize, KRC Executive Director Bernie Gallagher made the following statement:
“Keystone Research Center applauds Magee-Womens Hospital nurses for exercising their right to unionize. This is a huge victory for patient care and safe staffing, which research shows improves with unionization, as well as for workers. These nurses’ courage in the face of management intimidation could have a powerful demonstration effect for other nurses in UPMC. We urge UPMC to respect the vote, recognize the union, and bargain in good faith. This step strengthens voice and dignity for hospital nurses and offers a model for health-care workers across Pennsylvania and the nation.”
