Delayed September jobs report shows slight uptick in PA unemployment rate and continued steady job growth

HARRISBURG, PA – This morning, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry issued the first monthly jobs report for Pennsylvania since the federal government shutdown, covering September 2025. In response, Keystone Research Center economist Maisum Murtaza issued the following statement:

“Nearly two months later than normal, today’s September jobs report showed the continued resilience of the Pennsylvania economy. Nonfarm jobs ticked up 5,800 in September to 6,252,900 in September. Nonfarm jobs usually grow each month because of the gradual increase in the Pennsylvania working-age population. Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate rose one-tenth of a percentage point in September, to 4.1 percent, and is now four-tenths of a percentage point above the 3.7 percent rate in September 2024. The U.S. unemployment rate of 4.4 percent also rose by one-tenth of a point in September 2025.

“October and November state jobs numbers will be released together on January 7, 2026, and will provide a more up-to-date snapshot of the health of the U.S. economy and labor market.”
