HARRISBURG, PA—Following the announcement that the United Auto Workers union has reached agreement with General Motors – after agreements with Ford and Stellantis – Keystone ResearchCenter Executive Director Stephen Herzenberg made the following statement:
“The news of the agreements between UAW and large automakers over the past few days is welcome news for the thousands of hard-working Americans whose families will benefit from the long-overdue wage increases and other benefits secured by the union negotiators. This successful round of collective bargaining is more proof that unions continue to be the stewards of America’s middle class. It’s no wonder that two thirds of Americans approve of labor unions, and half of workers who aren’t unionized would join a union if they had a chance. Policymakers should look to institute policies at the state and federal levels that make it easier for workers to organize, which in turn will grow and strengthen the backbone of our economy – the middle class.”
